Many of the 450 mosques in the Netherlands have not registered with the country's Tax Authority, and as a result, Muslims who donate money to the institutions are unable to deduct the gift from their taxes. Since 2008 mosques (like churches) have had to register as an institution for general benefit (ANBI) in order to qualify for the deductions. While an increasing number of churches have done so through umbrella organizations, mosques have not. Currently there are less than 100 institutions in the register which are clearly Muslim, according to a spokesman from the Tax Authority.
